Well, I've personally known some Irish-American redheads (my big crush, Kathy Brady from Lakeland (Florida) High School - le sigh) who said all the women in their family got their red hair from the Irish grandmother.  That's the same as in my family.  I have two half sisters (we share the same mother) who both had red hair.  My mother's maiden name was Donovan.  When I was younger, my beard was reddish brown, but showed the red big time when I was out in the sun.  My best friend growing up had hair so red it was orange, and he got it from his Irish ancestors.  There ARE redheads in Ireland.  The Irish side of my family is living proof.  I'm not saying there are many, but they're there.  That's part of the charm, though.  If there were very many of them, they wouldn't be so exceptional.  The problem with Ireland is that it's a melting pot like the US.  There have been migrations/invasions by a number of ethnic groups into Ireland, which has served to dilute the Norse gene for red hair which is the source of most redheaded folk in that part of the world.
