Ive received mail about the upcoming expansion as most have by now.  and am thinking of picking it up soon.  Its The one i was looking at was the top option 49.99 USD.  Now when i type in the conversion rate this comes to £31.07 but I can select the conversion to gbp straight away and that shows it as £39.99 so am a bit puzzled how that works? do i change the rate now or leave it as usd to get the much better deal?

Also when i click on buy it seems to take me to a new account option or thats what it looks like to me.  Asked me for email address new password and other stuff.  Is this the normal way? and if anyone has done it how does it assoicate it with your current account, as I have definatly not logged in nor see anyway to actually log in.

Its a lot of money so I want to make sure i do it right, so hopefully anyone who has done this already can come up with some good info for me

Cheers

I haven't bought it yet. So usual disclaimers about hearsay.

I've seen people getting into trouble about the account details section: they end up buying Isengard, but attaching it to an entirely new account. So you're certainly right to stop at that point. I don't know what the correct conclusion to the process is though, I'm afraid.

When you're first asked for email address/password along with your credit card details, you're actually creating an account with Digital River, the company that's processing the pre-orders for Turbine.  They could certainly have done a better job explaining that.  I also balked the first time I got to that point.

After purchase, I got a pop-up window with a product code.  This was paying via credit card; for Pay Pal or Click 'n Buy users it might be different.  Logged in at myaccount.turbine.com, entered the code and then had a choice of upgrading my existing account or creating a new one.  I guess this is the point at which some people end up registering a new account; needless to say, go with upgrading your existing account!  It was done in seconds, and now my wee horsewoman alt has an outfit befitting her background.

I think you can safely buy in dollars to save some money. If I remember correctly, once you've purchased it you'll get a code or something with which to upgrade your existing LotRO account. Login into the Turbine account services to do this.

"For I am Saruman the Wise, Saruman Ring-maker, Saruman of Many Colours!'
I looked then and saw that his robes, which had seemed white, were not so, but were woven of all colours, and if he moved they shimmered and changed hue so that the eye was bewildered.
I liked white better,' I said.
White!' he sneered. 'It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken.'
In which case it is no longer white,' said I. 'And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom.' - Gandalf"

Finally got around to buying it yesterday.

It is cheaper to buy in dollars because there is no VAT as you are  theoretically buying it from the USA, or at least that seems to be the most logical reason suggested in various posts I have read. Whatever the reason I had no problems buying in dollars which is surprising since I have difficulty using my credit card for most purchases without several phone calls from the card company (Lloyds) after they have stopped the transaction and then want to know if I REALLY wanted to buy it!

The registration process is for the company acting on behalf of Turbine.

I logged into my account before applying the code, and made sure it was for existing account - though support is apparently quick to move it to your account if you make a mistake.

Yes I bought it in US dollars too- and also my monthly payments are made that way (saves quite a bit at the moment given the difference between the dollar/pound/euro)

I read somewhere that we have to declare it to the HMRC (if in UK) because we are obtaining services from overseas and thus legally should pay VAT and must declare this to them too- I am a private client tax lawyer by trade and do not know if this is correct (to my mind VAT should not be payable on this type of service- but I could be wrong). We have more tax legislation than any country in the world (even all of the USA) so I could be wrong- but I pay using US dollars as opposed to UK rates because it is more favourable.

One officer in the HMRC I know said I could face a hefty fine for not declaring VAT and paying the same, however someone who I know who is a Tax Commissioner says completely the opposite- my interpretation is that "hmm not too sure"- I will continue to pay in US dollars if it is cheaper for me to do so!

The product you are buying from the USA never leaves USA and you must "travel" to USA to use it. You don't actually get to own anything, but rather a permission to use something that permanently resides on a server in USA.

With my commoner's logic, with no understanding of tax law at all (especially the UK), I can't see how they could possibly demand you have to pay VAT.

That was easy.

Once I found out that Digital River want me to be living in GB, rather than the UK. That took *entirely* to long to twig (I eventually started looking for other European countries, in case we were all being forced to buy in other currencies. Finding "France" was a give away

And dear lord. Now they've got my phone number. WTF? Good job I've got a phone, otherwise I'd never be able to play a game!

I was expecting it to be much more complicated than that, given the problems that people have reported. Maybe there's something intrinsically complicated about "Upgrade my account" versus "Create new account", that I don't recognise.

Anyway, shiny new horsies!

you give them real information?

What I liked most was buying two expansions in Dollars cost me only a little more than one in euros.
