I know they're introducing this in the next patch but can anyone explain how excatly is it going to work and how does it differ from the current Roll / Pass?

Well, I think most of us only really have experience of the WoW system of this, where the rolling interface comes up and you can choose either need or greed to roll. Need rolls take priority over greed ones, greed ones allow people to roll on things they'd just sell.

Generall, taking stuff for alts counts as greed rather than need, but this can be discussed in group. We may know more once the patch hits the US tomorrow, as I'm not sure I've seen this discussed on the test server forums.

I don't like the sound of this as people tend to loot when combat is still going on so people will be going "need or greed, need or greed" in their heads when they should be concentrating on more important matters.

For kin fellowships I think we should bring in a rule 'No looting until combat has finished'

Personally I;m a bit iffy on the whole need/greed issue.  I can remember back in the days of EQ when need/greed was introduced  and been in groups and getting absolutely no items because people 'needed' them , either to wear, weild or for their alts.

I'm immediately gimped as I don't play alts and I don;t craft, I just don't have the time to concentrate on more than character.

Whether I can directly use an item is immaterial. I can sell it and use the money to buy something I can use. If I win it fair and square in a roll I don't want someone complaining at me they I should give to them because they can use it.

I agree with this but sometimes it is an automatic response to right click when the mob goes down... Combat looting is never going to go away so best just to get used to it. It would be nice if the roll windows appeared off to the side somewhere so they didn't get in the way so much.

My view on Need/Greed is that in a Kinship group it is pretty much redundant, because 99% of the time a person who wins something will be more than happy to pass it on to anyone else in the fellowship if they don't personally need it.

In PUGs, my preference would be to stick to the spirit of Need/Greed, i.e. Only roll Need if your current character needs the item, not an alt/kinship member etc. This should hopefully be stated by the group leader beforehand, but it would be my default position regardless. This won't be everyone's attitude however, so I'll go into PUGs expecting poor looting behaviour, and will be nicely surprised if everyone behaves well!

Moral of the story, stick to Kinship fellowships whenever possible!

Hopefully (and I've been praying for this) It means there will be 3 options: need, greed and pass.

You will select greed on practically everything, unless the character your using in that group will use it. This means the roll will be between people who need the item. If nobody rolls Need, the roll is between everyone who selected Greed.

This will mean:
-Less loot left on corpses because everyone was too polite to roll, as you can roll for an item without worrying that you're denying someone else of it.
-With the fast respawn rate in some areas, you won't need to stand and discuss who needs what, as it will be a little clearer from the rolls.

Hope that made sense, i re-wrote it about 6 times...

[edit:] in fact i wrote it enough times for other people to make my explanation redundant

Also, if you want to sell the item or give it to an alt, i'd say that was greed either way. As mentioned above there will always be those hunters who swear they need that sheild, but that's a pug thing.

I know by the end of my time in WoW most people agreed to just roll greed on everything and then give it to whoever needed it, except in the case of bind on pickup stuff (which we haven't seen any of in LOTRO yet, thankfully), and I'd be more than happy to keep to this in kin groups - as long as people who genuinely needed the stuff were given it! As Levin says, intrinsically we all need everything, because what we can't use can be sold - but I think amongst ourselves we can portion things out relatively easily and I've never seen that not happen in a kinship group.

I further agree that in-combat looting is pure evil and I hate it when it's done, even though I've been known to do it on automatic myself and always hate myself when I do. Remember that looting pops up a very inconvenient screen and your healers will find it incredibly distracting, it can mess up people getting conjunctions pressed in time, and it's overall something you don't want to see during a fight. The loot won't disappear but your health and sanity might :-)

I wish they'd work on the pretty poor UI some more, the biggest problem imho is that the loot window in combat takes away your current target, which just sucks.

Still I find it impolite to loot during combat, and as I am usually too busy to really care what the loot is, I will always roll need when in combat. Done it that way in WoW and worked fine - if people can wait until after combat I can then take my time to decide on need/greed, but not in combat.

Initially when i started playing this game I was passing on anything I didn't need, but in most PuGs it soon became apparent that I usually the only one doing this, so I started rolling on everything. Fortunately most groups I've been in are civilised enough that if an item comes up that someone really wants it's simply a case of handing it over.

csxjgf's right - need/greed should be redundant in kinship groups. As long as they steer away from those pesky bind-on-pickup items, which frankly ruined group play on WoW for me. And I totally agree with everyone who said that in-combat looting is wrong - I'm confused enough as it is during group combat without loot windows popping up all the time!

Personally, if I am in a group and something my character (ie. the one in the group) could use immediately as an upgrade drops, I would expect that group to defer it to me out of courtesy. And I would absolutely do the same for them.

It benefits the whole kinship if we help people to gear themselves up. Next time you are in that group and that minstrel runs out of power because s/he wasn't able to get a gear upgrade because someone took it to sell ... everyone loses out. There are so many other ways to get cash in the game, honestly.

It is distracting when people loot during combat, though. I agree on that
