Tales from Earthsea
Studio Ghibli

um, otherwise the DVD is entirely in Japanese, fortunantly my laptop has agreed that it can indeed play it (I just need to make sure that when I get down to that final region change I'm not stuck watching Japanese imports)

I picked this up at the post office MONTHS ago. I was terribly excited when it was ordered and still excited when I heard it had shipped. On the day I came home from work to find the USPS notice tucked into the door frame, I knew. I went inside, set down my bag and keys, used the bathroom, picked up my bag, walked the couple blocks to the post office to pick up the heavily taped box from Japan, walked back home, got to the front steps, vaguely started to reach for my bag and realized with dead certainty that my keys were on the other side of the locked door. My landlord has been out of town all summer, so I spent about 45 minutes negotiating with his lackies about which in the basket full of keys might be the spares to my appartment and when I finally got inside I'd had all the excitement I could handle for the day and didnt watch the movie.

Tulian asked this weekend if I thought it was any good and I smacked my forehead and immediatly found it on the shelf and packed it up with my work things. I'll let you know when its done what I think!

So, how are YOU passing the time (except for Stamm) being unable to log in?

Well, at the moment I'm watching EQ.

Speaking of Earthsea, just finished The Farthest Shore, good stuff.

Tales from Earthsea
2006
Studio Ghibli
Goro Miyazaki (son of famed anime director Hayao Miyazaki)

3/5 of Kawaii's most prized posessions

I know I posted about this when I first discovered its existance. I am a huge LeGuin fan. Own just about everything shes written, quite a lot of it first edition, a couple things signed (one of my prized posessions is a picture of her signing a book for me). Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fanatic or anything. I just grew up reading the Earthsea Trilogy and have over the years bought books as I came across them, and I prize first editions. Yes, I'm a bibliophile, or was until I ran into you lot.

I have not however reread any of the Earthsea books, probably since High School. The story lines are a little fuzzy in my mind as are the characters. As such, I didn't really have a problem with the film in terms of messing with the story or character traits, which I'm positive it does. It is an engaging film, definantly worth getting a hold of if you can. (Good luck) However, it has one of the main flaws of anime - a cheesy bad guy that could have been picked up from any other anime film in existance, no need to change costume, voice or manerisims. Bah. I hate those characters. That combined with a lack of spark, makes me give it a 3 out of 5, though, perhaps a 3.5 would be closer to the mark. I did enjoy it. But it is not one that I want to watch again immediatly. Let me recommend Naussica or Howl's Moving Castle if you want great anime from Studio Ghibli. Or, go see Stardust. Now how come no one has written a review of that one yet? Get off yer lazy asses and go see that one! Great date movie *wink*, or take the kids.

I whimper alot... but that gets old and after awhile I get bored with reading posts in various forums.

Beautiful full moon to night.  Took a walk hit starbucks then went to play in the mud at the ceramics studio.

Working on the last Harry Potter book...

Funny miss hanging with my friends in game more than playing the game itself.

Yes and Ursela LeGuin is a good read.... at least form what i remember

Been watching the new Ken Burns series on WWII.   Its compelling and well done.

Oh my goodness -- you met her? In the flesh? Well, obviously... it'sjust a little hard for me to take in, it's rather like someone sayingthey met [insert deity of your choice here].

The closest I came was that I once went to a conference where herbrother was one of the speakers, so I had a bit of a chat with him, butsadly he didn't want to talk about how brilliant his sister is.

I had no idea that Ghibli had done a version of the _Earthsea_ stories.I'm not sure I could manage that. I love them so intensely (especiallythe second one) that any difference from my imagined versions wouldprobably drive me to some sort of breakdown. (For Ghibli enthusiasts,by the way, I'd also very very strongly recommend _Spirited Away_.)

I still don't think I've ever read a better novel than _The Left Handof Darkness_, judged by any standard. I read that and _TheDispossessed_ at an impressionable age and I have a feeling that thosetwo books made me who I am, to a large extent (at least as much asschool, family etc.)

Must channel some of this rather teenage gush into writing her a fanletter one of these days, rather than abusing the Sanctuary forums...

I rented Jodorowsky's La Cravate and a Korean monster movie, The Host. Haven't seen them yet. I've almost finished reading Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond, which has been collecting dust for months. God I love RL sometimes!
