The new Mission Architect system will be coming soon.  We'll be able to create our own missions, and even our own enemies.  I have been playing around with some ideas.  We'll know more when open beta starts, but it looks to me like we'll be able to create entire campaigns.

One approach would be for a bunch of folks to create characters which all have a similar theme.  Then one or more people could create missions which fit in with that theme.  Everyone could play through those missions together, or even separately.

For this to work, the characters would all need to share some common attributes.  Motivation would be important, since that's what drives characters from one mission to the next.

Here are some of the themes which catch my imagination.  How many people would be interested in making a character for one of these groups?

Steampunk:  characters like Indiana Jones, or a Jules Verne hero,or someone from Lovecraft, or the MidnightClub.  Some magic, some two-fisted fighting, some Nemesis inspiredsteam technology.  All the characters were somehow jumped through time to the present day, maybe because of the Midnight Club or Ouroboros.

Superhero High:  All high school kids with superpowers.  Contacts are teachers and missions are school assignments.

Redemption: all characters are former members of various gangs, trying to change their lives.  They won't get much respect or help from the police or other heroes at first.

Police Officers:  Characters are all members of the police force, given special duties because of their special powers.

Mercenaries, or Hero Corps members, out to make a buck.

Dojo:  All the heroes trained at the same dojo.  Must avenge the death of their master, who was murdered by members of some evil rival school.

Senior Citizens:  A group of older, retired heroes are reluctantly dragged back into active duty when one of their own dies and none of the current generation of heroes appreciate the importance of the situation.  Stupid kids.

While I like the idea of a themed team, I don't think that MA will be the way to do it.

First its in a seperate part of the game, so unless you are teaming as a group of people who are playing with virtual reality in a building and it gets out of hand, its kind of a stretch to try to fit a team into it.

Second, making 50 levels worth of content is going to be a royal pain. I'm guessing that once you get used to the mission maker,  you could make a simple mission in about 20 minutes.  A complex mission with multiple parts, and a custom group or groups, you are looking at say 15-20 hours to make and test, and your team will blow thru it in maybe a couple of hours.

Third, unless all your arcs are good enough to get Dev choice, you will have, if I remember corectly, a 3 story arc limit, so its either rerunning the same arc for multiple levels, or having multiple creators, or having enough content done before hand to be able to switch in the arcs you need as we get to them.

My suggestion would be to only use the MA to make specific mission every say 5 or 10 levels, similar to the Kheld arcs, and even then whoever gets stuck playing GM might not make it to the end.

Of the specific ideas you suggested, I like the steampunk and the school kids ideas the best.

The arc limit would make it necessary to swap missions in and out.  Making 50 levels worth of missions would certainly be a challenge, but it sounds like a fun challenge to me.

Until we get to play with it, it's hard to say how long it will take to make missions.  The way I imagine it working is that some folks would create characters.  I'd put up a new arc in the middle of the week.  Those folks who are interested could all run that arc sometime that week.  Maybe they would all run it together, like we do with our current weekly groups, or maybe they would each run it alone, or maybe a mix of both, depending on who could log in when.

After a week, I'd take that arc down and put up another.  It's hard to say how it would work out, but it's an idea I'd like to play around with.
