Shamans are useful in raids for their totems and back up healing.  Again a Shaman should NEVER be a primary healer in a group raid.  Because of the 3 paths of a Shaman it is important to understand who your shamans are and what their primary path is.

The totems when used effectively can deal a devistating blow to your enemy while also offering the group beneficial aids.

Use this thread to discuss the three paths of the shaman and how to effectively use them in a raid.

Yea as a shaman you are going to respec at least twice, early on elemental/enhancment is fine till into the 40's then post 50 you will want to respec restoration since your primary job is going to basically be 1. backup healer and 2. pull agro off primary healer. You just dont' have the dps higher up and you aren't or hp/ac to tangle with the big boys and shamans were never really a mana effecient class.

Re-Posted. As requested I am doing a overview of both Shaman basics, and specs

Basics and Offensive Spells: A shaman is, in most basic terms, anall-out support class. Shocks are good support spells for countering, controling runners and keeping tabs on rogues. Lightning Bolt is usefulfor basic DPS support mage-style, while Chain-lightning is an effectiveattack to support overall DPS agaist a group, as well as pull some agroto yourself. Lightning Shield is an effective way to add some extra DPSto any target atacking you, while the various weapon buffs add somedamage and effect to your target.

Defensive Spells: This is all healing (save reincarnation), and even ifyour are speced as restoration, you should never be the main healer ifyou can avoid it. Like the above spells, these are not mana efficiantand should be used in a support roll, however, unlike the other specswhich allow you to take over a main roll, even a speced shaman healershould not be you main one. There three heals, chain (heals threetargets),wave, and light wave. Reincarnation lets you exchange an anhkto revive yourself, good for instance wipes.

Totems: These are the purest of the support spells. I will detail thevarious elements starting with earth. Earth, mostly defensive, thetotems here buff your stats as well as remove negitive ones, also thecan serve as target dummies. Fire, these are your offensives totems, both adding DPS to your attacks and just plain doing it. Water, yourhealing totems, can restore both mana and health, as well as curesataus ailments. Wind, multipurpose, contains buffs, spell counters aswell as some DPS addition. Also, there are three resistance totems Fireresists Ice, Water resists Fire, and Air resists Nature. Also note thatyou can only use one totem of each element at a time, and also thattotems effects do not stack.

Specs

Elemental: Your offensive spell spec, benefits range from flat outdamage, lower cooldown, lower cost to a ganenteed crit. This is myspec, basicly it allows you to do some mage-like damage while stillholding your own in melee - Unless you are a tad crazy (like me) youshould probobly not tank with this spec.

Enhancement: Your melee and buff spec, inproves buff totems as well asweapon buffs and various melee effects (such as improved crit rate). This was my first spec, and you can usualy tank fairly well, and wellas dish out some very nice melee DPS.

Restoration: Your healing and healing totem tree. I am not veryknowlageable about this, so I will let Tuala ( being resteration spec)hammer out the details.

I do not believe this to be true about resto shammys not being the mail healer. Pending on your build, I am currently full resto and running a spirit based build. Having that in mind, when I am in combat healing, I tick well over 50 points of mana, which allows me to heal effectively, without the issue of running out of mana..
