I see you point, sorta, EW.  I remember seeing a character called "Holy Spirit" in CoH the other night and thinking, "That's a candidate for the nerf bat."
BUT comic books have had super heroes likened to angels... and KidA used the term in that same metaphysical sense.  It's not as though her character is called "Street Angel"....  But ... your view is as good a take on the inexplicable nerf as any. <sigh>

I agree, Eagle, that Paragon Studios COULD "take" player-used names (and not give compensation; giving compensation sets a legally poor precedent), because, technically, they own the name already.  But the most likely scenario is that they use both their name-checker software AND draw from the bank of names that their employees have used over the years.   I've no doubt that most Cryptic Studio and, later, Paragon Studio employees who play the game/work in the nuts and bolts of the game have several names each squirreled away on every server.  It's what I did when I was working on such games, back long, long ago. <smile>  After all, it makes better customer-service sense to draw from stuff that's always been "restricted" than to "take" from paying customers, even if said paying customers have come up with clever, evocative names.  Lots of names they've used - Fusionette, Statesman, Manticore, Apex, Lady Grey, Castle, Citadel, etc.,etc. - give an impression, at best, of an archetype without actually defining the powers used.  Frostfire is the opposite sort of name; you KNOW he ought to have both ice and fire powers, but you don't know if its as a tank, a blaster, or a controller.  I suspect they have a bank of restricted names that lean heavily to the archetype/anything style... just because the name becomes whatever your writer makes of it when the time comes to use it on a character.

But... this is all speculation.  I, personally, am going to stick with the notion that ... if you are innocent-of-intent to copy (name, story, look) AND paid attention to the categories of names that are specifically disallowed in the  ToS (names of famous people,  etc.), then the odds are likely that you won't get hit by the nerf bat.  But that's because I tend to hope for the best for everyone. <smile>

I doubt the angel thing was the complaint --- The game has demon npcs, demon summoning, halos, demonic character features like horns, hooves, and pointed tails etc.   I don't think you can do a superhero game without vaguely touching on religion in some way.

That being said, one thing I've noted as missing in COH has always been Churches and Gas stations.

Yeah, just throwing ideas out there. It's one thing for another player in the game to have a grudge, but it's another for the devs to have a reason to go along with it. What I mean is, a player can make a complaint, but it would seem to me they'd have to give a reason why something was offensive, wouldn't they? Just saying "it's offensive" doesn't provide any context.

The demon thing sort of reminds me of an off topic thing. I have a friend who as a kid had the Palladium RPG books, which featured pages with demons on them. His parents wouldn't let him play D&D because of the 80s connotations with it and devil worship, but he could play other RPGs. Anyway, he was only allowed to play Palladium if the pages with the demons on them had an X over the pages, even if it was just in pencil. I guess that somehow warded off the evil, lol...

It occurs to me that if certain individuals have a pattern of this sort of behavior, this could be construed as harassment-and thus actionable as a petition.  You might have to supply detailed info, but it's an avenue to look into.  Because, honestly, given all the things that continue to keep happening due to said individual, it sure sounds like harassment to me.

On a more amusing note:

And buses.  I live for the day when those who wait at all the bus stops in Paragon City will finally have buses to pick them up.

(Fun fact-there's gas stations in Praetoria!)

These days churches in Californian cities seem to have given up the old "cathedral" or "New England steeple" look.  There seems to be a new fashion in converting warehouses in the business districts into churches.  (Which MAY make sense from a traffic-problem sense, given the business districts often are not busy on Sundays.)  But they don't tend to LOOK like churches - at least to my old-fashion senses. <smile>  So... it's possible that Paragon City has taken up that fashion?

I actually know of several mini-congregations of churches here that co-op space with mini-synagogue congregations.  One religion has the building on Friday night to Saturday and the other has it for Sunday services.  Seems to work quite well.  Also one of the largest synagogues (which I belong to) rents parking space for High Holiday services with the three churches surrounding it and the three churches rent parking during Christmas and Easter services plus other big events.  Plus one of the churches rents space to a small Muslim group for daily worship.  Rather nice they all get along with each other.

Eagle you were saying about the devs taking names from players previous to the game coming out.  Yes that is actually correct.  However a lot of the names were for contests.  Apex and War Witch are prime examples of that along with the surviving eight of the original Freedom Phalanx and some of Recluse's lackeys.  Or a memorial which the player base wrote in on and asked for.  Which is what Coyote is named for. Other names of NPC's are subtle nods to tv and movies (that Det. Freitag sure looks like someone, same with that guy in Founders, the Mountie in Faultline, and the 5-O in PI. . . Not to mention that black market truck in the Isles. . .)

Back on topic.  The GM's generally just give a generic reason when sending a letter telling you something has been removed.  All my notice said was the material was offensive to other players and if I did something like that two more times I would be removed from the game.  So I won't be writing AE's for a bit till things cool off.
