This AE Arc is called To Pull the Wings Off an Angel by @KidA

I am trying to redeem my character Street Shot and make him worthy to rejoin the hero society.

Street Shot has been in jail on a bunch of trumped up charges from Crey.  They want to make an example out of him to the public as to what happens when a hero goes bad and needs to be punished.  Detective Luna got wind of this and he along with his fellows have delved into the issue.  But the precinct is full of people who do not see eye to eye with his faction.  So he just happened to leave a few items for you to find.  Unfortunately Crey knows this too and is moving to stop him by kidnapping Street Shot.  And what is this mysterious Project Winged Protector. . .

Go find out and try to understand a former team mate's plight.  maybe he'll be worthy of rejoining the team someday or else have his wings removed permanently.

Fixed the ending, certain villains and added in a few surprises.

I have finally learned the AE arc was reported as "inappropriate and offensive to other players".  A certain troll e-mailed me via my personal e-mail (he has been blocked) to gloat in regards to it, besides officially being sent a note by the GM's.

I don't understand that at all, KidA.  Were you given any specifics about what was offensive?
I admit that I didn't play your revamp, but I played the original with a team (encountering the technical problems that I suspect you fixed in the 2nd iteration) AND completely through solo... and neither time did I notice anything I'd've thought offensive.  Did you make major story changes in your 2nd version?

However, if there were complaints, there's nothing much to be done but try to avoid whatever the problem(s) was/were next time around.  Offense, like beauty, is often in the eye of the beholder.  Authors and directors have to be very aware of that.  But many of us novices are still learning clear writing skills.
Which is why I'm curious as to whether you were given specifics.  At least you can learn something from specifics.

Sorry I did not answer this right away.  I only get a half hour to an hour of time on the computer, since the husband's is the only one with internet service at the moment.

I personally did not find it offensive.  Everyone who tested it out did not find it offensive.  But the "Troll" needed to stick in one more swipe at me (besides taking my character names, looks and backgrounds on Exalted then claiming they were his) so they obviously went to the AE, looked up the only story I had under my KidA account, then tagged it as offensive.

I did not make any changes to the plot except to add an AV which resembled a much stronger Streetshot plus more Crey guards.  I also removed the self buffing and regeneration on various NPC's.  I sent a note back to the GM's stating this but they had completely wiped the database of it.  I also received the usual canned response as to who had tagged it as offensive.  The "Troll" took it upon themself to confirm they were the one who had destroyed the mission.

I understand about limited access, KidA.  Hope that improves for you soonest. <smile>

I'm also sorry about your AE story.  I guess I'll continue to not understand.

I want to make a comment, though, to remind EVERYONE, that "names, looks, and backgrounds" do NOT belong to you or to anyone playing CoX.   It ALL belongs only to NCSoft and Paragon Studios.  We may feel that we are creative in our character designs and AE mission writing, but the Terms of Service - to which we agree to every time we click on the button that allows us to play in CoH/V - is our promise that we give up ALL rights to those designs and writings.  If someone wants to "borrow" something they saw on one server and use it on another server, simply consider it flattery.  They clearly admired what they'd seen and could not come up with something they liked better.  But don't call it "stealing" or "taking from".  If you don't own it, it can't be stolen from you.

I agree about the ownership issue -- but it can come back to bite you.  One comic book company recently came up with a character called STARBORN.   Only problem is there has been a character AND SG using that name for years in game - on multiple servers.   I've been waiting for the inevitable axe to fall on that one...

It makes you wonder how some of the homage and copycat toons can survive long enough to make 50 -- but they do.

I honestly don't think that the devs would drop the axe on Starborn.
THEY'RE not going to face a copyright battle with the new comic character; they have proof that "they've" owned their version for how many years?
It's a two way street, really.  The fact that they own what we've come up with means that - if we're original, they have THE copyright, if they're willing to protect it.

I think that willingness is the key. I have to imagine they're more invested in protecting characters and concepts they've put energy into as opposed to taking away a name from a player. Who knows, though?

As far as Gaia's case goes, no clue, but is there any chance someone could have found it objectionable because of the possible religious connotation of the word angel? Just grasping at straws obviously.

It comes down to money....

If the owners of the STARBORN comic want to protect their copyright, they'd have to stop on all misuse.   You may be right about CoH having the technical rights to the character  Trick here is they'd have to become aware of them..   You try and search STARBORN and not know of  City of Heroes?  You won't find out about that character without digging DEEP on a google search.     Would Boom Studios threaten a lawsuit?  Maybe. Doubtful they'd actually go through with it.  I would see Paragon Studios folding easily.   They'll protect their OWN characters , but not players.    Lawsuits are expensive, distractive, and nuisances.   IT would be interesting to see a comic book company trounced by the game in the courts, but I don't think it would get that far.

I would suspect that several players had early characters that had names taken by later Dev NPCs that came along like Castle , not to mention NPC character heroes like Fusionette.  I bet if they feel they NEED a name, they'll take it from a player.  I'd be interested to know what kind of compensation they'd give...
