((I stumbled across this, so I figured that I would post it. A bit of a blast from the PK past! Feel free to share your Academy stories!
))
Before the Bell Rings: Origin of the
Grae
Academy
by Ledgerdemain
The
Grae
Knight landed in the middle of the rose garden that greeted anyone coming to Ledgerdemain’s apartment. It bared the look of being neglected for quite a while, but considering all Ledgerdemain had been though, that was unsurprising. Nobody had seen, or heard, from Ledgerdemain in days so
Grae
decided to take it upon himself to check on Ledge.
Grae
walked up the glass French doors, knocked gently, and awaited an answer.
After about 10 minutes Ledgerdemain finally appeared, slowly ambling towards the door, and opened it gingerly just enough to clear his face “To what do I owe the honor of your visit good Sir Knight?” he said tiredly.
Grae
appraised Ledgerdemain for a moment, and he had never seen the gentleman in worse shape. He was completely disheveled from head to toe, his face was thoroughly unshaven, and looked like he had slept in his tuxedo for the last 3 days.
Grae
let out a brief sigh “I came to see how you were doing” he said with genuine concern in his voice “you look terrible Robert (Robare).”
“I feel worse” Ledgerdemain said either not realizing Grae’s attempt at humor, or not caring. “Are you here to arrest me?” he asked.
An eyebrow rose up from behind the
Grae
Knight’s sunglasses “No” he said “I am just here to see how my friend, and fellow Knight, is doing after his ordeal.” He paused for a moment “May I come in?”
Ledgerdemain stepped back to open the door wider to let
Grae
in, and they both headed into the kitchen where Ledgerdemain made coffee for them.
Grae
sat quietly, for a while, until Ledgerdemain finally spoke “I wish you would arrest me” his said his voice, like his spirit, drained “Maybe then I would begin to feel like I can atone for the heinous crimes I committed.”
“I am not going to argue with you, about this, again Robert (Robare)”
Grae
said firmly “You have been cleared of all charges, and your Hero status has been restored, so you need to decide what you are going to do next.”
“I do not know what to do now...” Ledgerdemain said trailing off.
“Well”
Grae
said not giving Ledgerdemain a chance to wallow in his guilt “you need to get up, and get dressed; because we are heading over to King’s Row.”
“King’s Row?” Ledgerdemain said both surprised and confused “Why on earth are we going there?”
“I have some official Knights business there, and you need to get out of this apartment for a while, so I thought we could accomplish both at once”
Grae
said with a smile.
“You cannot be serious,
Grae
?” Ledgerdemain said.
Grae
stood up, and folder his arm, bringing all of his commanding presence to bear “That is an order Knight.”
It was Ledgerdemain’s turn to raise an eyebrow as his face took on a look of shock at the
Grae
Knight’s edict. He stood up himself, and let out a sleight chuckle “As you wish” he said with a bow, and headed off to freshen up.
The
Grae
Knight stood there waiting on him for what seemed like an eternity “He takes as long as Lady
Grae
does to get ready!” he thought to himself when Ledgerdemain appeared as if on cue. He looked much more like the Ledgerdemain he knew except for the sullen expression he still wore.
Grae
nodded towards him “Are you ready?” he asked.
“As ready as I can be; I suppose” he responded softly.
“Then lets get going”
Grae
said, and with that they both headed off towards King’s Row.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
They both arrived in King’s Row, and preceded towards the Paragon Police Department headquarters. While in route, something caught the
Grae
Knight’s attention, so he landed in the middle of the street, and motioned for Ledgerdemain to join him.
“What is the problem
Grae
?” Ledgerdemain asked.
“Over there”
Grae
said as he pointed to a small park next to the overpass where two children were playing a game of tag.
“You wish to observe some children?” Ledgerdemain asked surprised “I do not see the point of...” he trailed off as he noticed that the children were not playing tag, but running from something.
The Lost came barreling out of the alleyway, towards the children, and the children were frantically trying to get away as one fell clutching her ankle. “Leave my sister alone!” the older brother shouted at the Lost, and an audible blast emanated from the young man’s mouth knocking a couple of them back.
The little girls sat there crying until a green light emanated from the little girl’s hands. When the glow subsided, the crying stopped, and she stood back up to run.
The
Grae
Knight and Ledgerdemain sprang into action without a word, and charged the Lost.
Grae
tacked half of the Lost away from the children as Ledgerdemain summoned his Phantom Army to handle the remaining ones, and then went over to the children “Stay close, and keep silent” he whispered, and the three of them faded from view.
Ledgerdemain absconded with the children to a spot some distance away, but still easily within sight. He knelt down, to the two children “Stay here, and do not make a sound” he whispered quickly “they will not see you through my spell.” Both children nodded emphatically, and Ledgerdemain return to the fight.
The
Grae
Knight was still in the thick of battle, when Ledgerdemain returned, and he was fighting with all of the skill and courage that a man with the word Knight is his name should be. It did seem to become too much when the Phantom Army vanished, and the other Lost joined their compatriots to combat
Grae
.
The
Grae
Knight was surrounded, and the Lost slowly moved in on their captured prey. The situation looked bleak, and the expression on Grae’s face seemed to confirm that for them. Upon closing in further, The
Grae
Knight’s expression changed from one of worry to that confidant smile that people are so used to seeing on his face “Gotcha” he whispered, and then immediately shouted “Now!”
Ledgerdemain appeared, hovering in the air, ten feet above The
Grae
Knight, and briefly surveyed them all with a regal grace that is customary for the gentleman of old. He raised both of him arms high into the air “Sposto l'equilibrio; resistenza siete mine!” he intoned loudly, enacting the spell, and a glow enveloped them all as the spell completed
The
Grae
Knight leapt into the air, whirling about as he did, and brought his sword down on them all landing with a thunderous crack that brought them all down in one fell swoop. “Works every time” he said with a chuckle. He then looked up at Ledgerdemain “Where are the children?” he asked concerned.
Ledgerdemain smiled, pointing behind
Grae
, and the children faded into view as
Grae
turned to look “They are safe” Ledgerdemain said calmly smiling.
Both men stood looking the children for a moment. They were very scared, and after the ordeal they had gone through, neither man was surprised. “They have powers”
Grae
said matter of factly.
“Yes” Ledgerdemain responded “I wonder if their parents are aware of it.”
The
Grae
Knight beckoned them to return, and gingerly they walked back. “Are you okay?”
Grae
asked sincerely, but the children could not answer, because they were intimidated by his naturally commanding presence.
Ledgerdemain placed a hand on Grae’s shoulder “Perhaps I should handle this part my friend” he said smiling, and
Grae
nodded taking a few steps back.
Ledgerdemain knelt down in front of them, giving them his best, and most disarming smile “Is your sister okay young man?” he said softly “Are you okay as well?”
“Yeah” the young man said still on edge.
“That is good to hear” Ledgerdemain said “This is a dangerous place for anyone to be, let alone children.”
The young man looked down “Yeah...I know.”
“Then you should be with your parents” Ledgerdemain continued.
“They are at work” the young man said.
“Do you two have names?” Ledgerdemain said.
“I am Bradley, and she is Emily” Bradley said.
“It is a pleasure to meet you both” Ledgerdemain said smiling warmly.
“You both have very remarkable gifts” Ledgerdemain said “Do your parents know about them?”
“Yes” Bradley said “we are not home much because of that.”
“That is nonsense” Ledgerdemain said sternly “We should get you to your home.” He looked around for a minute “Where, may I ask, is home for you two anyway, and why are you not in school?”
Emily looked up at this point “Our home is 4 blocks away” she said sadly “we are not at school, because people get weirded out by our powers, so I skip school a lot to avoid getting picked on.” She hugged her brother “Bradley comes with me to keep me safe”
“I see...” Ledgerdemain said concerned “One moment, and then we shall depart.”
The children nodded, and Ledgerdemain turned towards
Grae
“This is unacceptable Grae” he began “if these children, also others like them, are not allowed to get the required education in academia; and the use of their powers, then many may wind up in similar circumstances.”
“I agree”
Grae
said “someone should do something about it.”
“Indeed.” Ledgerdemain said.
“Perhaps, someone from the Knights?”
Grae
continued.
“Splendid idea!” Ledgerdemain responded.
“How about a certain Magician who tends wears a tuxedo with a top hat, and likes teaching?”
Grae
said casually.
“Yes!” Ledgerdemain nodded, and then his expression transformed to one of surprise at Grae’s words “I beg your pardon?”
A big smirk overtook Grae’s face “Well, you wanted a way to atone for your actions, so I thought this was a good way to do it.”
“You actually mean this?” Ledgerdemain said surprised, and
Grae
nodded in affirmation. “I have just walked blindly into this one, haven’t I?” he said chucking, and
Grae
nodded again, his smirk turning into a grin. “So, I am to be Headmaster of this...what shall we call this
academy
Grae
?” he asked.
Grae’s face took on a thoughtful expression “The
Grae
Academy
...I like the sound of that. They laughed together as they walked the children home.
Now the real story begins...
