Instant Messaging goes live with tonight's code push!  Wherever user links are seen (with the icons for sending a private message and viewing their blog), a new icon will appear for starting a chat session.  Especially useful when used in combination with the "Who's Online" widget, the Instant Messaging functionality is, of course, fully integrated with your site and requires no configuration on your part.  It requires no java or other plug-ins, and will not require any special firewall tweaks.

The chat icon is, of course, customizable to guild admin tastes in the Control Panel, under Style Tools, General Style Settings, under the "User Links" tab.

Hehe -- hmmm...  Maybe an away status thing would be good.

An update real quick, though: I'm about to do a code push that'll fix a couple quirks with it when using Safari or Chrome.

I think some users will enjoy the feature. Though I would like the option to disable the links on my site. Same as we can for the Blog link?

Yeah actually there's a bug in it now, so if you do disable the blog and mail links, it'll also disappear.

However, what's going to happen shortly will be a simple drop-down that will replace the icons entirely.  I mean, they'll still show up when you click the user name, but in a menu.  All you'll have cluttering up your screen at that point will be a simple down arrow, like this:

▼ [ User Name ]

Kind of like the forum menus, but much cleaner, faster, and more easily customizable by the CSS types.  The customizable images will all remain the same.  We just need to switch to the menu format to make room for some more stuff that's coming up.

Well, aside from support tickets, the next month has Sandy and I scheduled for feature request reviews, prioritization, and implementation.  If doing it the way we're talking about ends up working well, we'll continue with it as our way of getting stuff done.  Priority will be kinda based on the following factors (for each feature request):
  1. The number of people who have requested it.
  2. Estimated development time required.
  3. Estimated complexity introduced (if any) to end-user.
  4. Estimated impact to existing workflow.
  5. Applicability to multiple/all games.
This'll be an interesting experiment.  Anyone who follows methodologies in development could probably tell that we've been fairly cowboy in our approach to everything.  While that's always meant new features faster, it's also meant that we've sometimes missed the mark on whether what we're currently working on is what you folks really want to see.  Back to methodologies, we're looking to move to the slightly more sedated -- and measured -- "agile" approach.

It just occurred to me that I wrote all that, but instead of answering what was coming up, I described how it was going to come up.  I should have been in politics.

Aaron, can you offer the ability to turn the chat off. I don't want to constantly receive chat requests while at work.
