Alrighty, we're finally able to consistently reproduce the problem here, and we've got a ticket in with the editor vendor, as well as a post in their forums about it.  They're usually pretty good, so we'll keep you updated on what happens.  If anyone has any specifics or insight that I didn't list in the post over there, and if you're feeling extra generous with your time, any other details added to the thread would help tons!

I just wanted to update everyone that we are still working on this, we have had a fewvideos pass between us and Telerik.   We did get Telerik a video of the error on their site; we are now waitingfor something back from them.

Thanks so much for your patience!

Alright, after a lot of back-and-forth, including making a video for them demonstrating the problem being re-created, and another back-and-forth (because they were on an older version of OpenOffice), they were able to reproduce the problem.

They say that it is not a "problem of the editor, but how the content is pasted from OpenOffice in the browser and editor."  In addition, "Since this is a Safari problem on the MAC, you can also instruct your users to try FireFox, where this problem does not exist.  The rich text editing engine of FireFox is better than this of Safari and offers better support for img and table elements [as well]."

Now, I know very well that we cannot instruct you folks to do anything, especially when it comes to which browser you choose to use.  We may as well start dictating that you use only a certain operating system, while we're at it.

I know this problem happens in Word as well, and with Chrome on the PC.  So I did tell them it's an unacceptable resolution, explained that it doesn't just happen on the Mac or in Safari, and am awaiting their response.

They did suggest something that I found works fairly well, though: try using the Paste from Word button on the toolbar,  or the regular Paste button (to the left of it).  If either button works any better than regular pasting (or right-click pasting), please let me know.  Also, if it doesn't, let us know even faster, since they're hoping to close our ticket with that work-around.

Terribly sorry for the pain the new editor has brought, and for our slip when it came to not extensively testing it with all of the more recent word processors x the top 6 browsers.  Certainly our fault there.  We do have a long history of using Telerik's components -- the editor being the primary one -- and they have had a long history of delivering on their promised compatibilities.  Still, it's no excuse for us not verifying it extensively.

The only thing I can offer up is a reason for why we moved to a more recent version of the component: if we don't stay up to around two quarters past their current release, support for it becomes very difficult to obtain, as their expertise is more focused on their later releases.  Additionally, there are some really cool things that become easier for us to do as they advance the core editor itself.  Adding custom buttons that perform ajax operations (like searching Wowhead), drop-downs for smilies that clear up a lot of clutter, etc.

Anyway, I'll keep on them.  Just wanted to keep you all updated.

Hi Aaron!

I'm having a similar problem with my forums. I'm wondering if it isn't the editor that stripping out spaces, but the script that retrieves and displays the post?

I have a post from last year that I know was fine until recently (or maybe since I last edited it in May of this year). The reason I know it was fine is because the spaces that are being stripped out are in the CSS. I just edited this post today and had to add a second space to make it display properly. When I view the CSS while editing the post, the spaces are there but after saving and viewing, the spaces are gone. I haven't fixed the square icon CSS (specifically the deathknight, check, nocheck and closed classes), so you can see the spaces are gone. I'm guessing you can give yourself admin rights and view the contents in the editor to see the spaces are there, if not I'll add you

Maybe this bit of info will help solve this problem?... I hope so!

Thanks a ton, Mottie!  That helped very much.  Using that and what Guppy provided earlier, we're on our second round of videos, so they'll have a lot more detail to work with now.  Here's the one we put together with your snippet.

Hmmmm I found another odd thing with the editor...

Take this bit of HTML
<img src="http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa236/Mottie1/testsite/cat-avatar.jpg">
<br>
<div style="background: #ddd url(http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa236/Mottie1/testsite/cat-avatar.jpg); width:64px; height:64px;"></div>
and paste it into the forum editor. If you switch from HTML mode to Design mode and back (or just save the post and view it) you'll see the problem.

It doesn't touch the URL inside the <img> tag, but it messes up the URL of the background definition inside the <div> - it makes the "M" in Mottie lowercase and thus breaks the link. It does this very consistently, but it won't do it if you are using the plain text/BBCode editor.

Hey Aaron!

That post on the Telerik forums says they found the bug in Safari/Chrome... I've only been using Firefox and IE8. And as you can see another poster submitted a ticket about IE8. I have a feeling that they didn't really find the problem at all.

And I don't mean to make this thread about problems with the editor, but I like to have breaks between my lists. But it seems that the editor strips those out as well. In the screen shots below, the before image is what I typed in and the after image is what I see after switching to HTML mode and back to Design mode.

Before   After

And it doesn't matter if I add two or three line breaks while editing... I have to go in and manually add the breaks after the list close tag
This is my list<br />
<ul>
    <li>Item #1</li><br>
    <li>Item #2</li><br>
    <li>Item #3</li>
</ul>
This is text below my list
It's not really that big a deal, but it doesn't behave!

P.S. There is another problem someone reported to me about doubling quotes... I'll try to investigate it more before posting

Fingers of Fury!

I have found that if you type something up in notepad, save then reopen the file and copy from there back into the editor that it clears up this issue. At least within IE7.

My issue with spaces being stripped in the editor has been dominated by copying text that is already on the GuildPortal forums, and then pasting it into the editor (with ctrl+c and ctrl+v).  And I am using the latest version of Firefox.  Pasting messages, updating guides... any copy/pasting that I have to do within the site falls under the umbrella of this bug.
