Hello,

I'm wondering how I can change my site to one that has those spiffy themes and buttons, with background graphics that match. You know... the kind of sites that look nice enough to enter the Spotlight guild.

I've spent a lot of time adding information to our site, and so I am a bit hesitant to actually revamp the whole thing, worrying that I might lose certain information.

Does anyone here actually pay for a service to customize your site?
I am not that savvy to be able to make it custom enough.  /shrug

Our kinship is based on Knighthood, and Lord of the Rings. So how could I change

THIS, The Old Guard

to something more medieval that combines LOTRO and Knighthood?

Wondering how I can get a custom template with custom buttons without having to re-arrange a lot of site features. Or is that inevitable?

Thanks.

There are lots of ways to customize your site.  If you're looking to apply a template though, I imagine that would involve rearranging things, or in other words, tweaking things back to the way you had them set up.

However, GP has a lot of nice tools that you can use to just plug in images that will customize your site.  I don't use CSS or any super smart PC language, I just make the images or graphics I want and plug them in.  You can really dress up a site just by adding images to some of the fields in your Control Panel under "Style and Colors."

There are plenty of people here that are more technical than I and could help you with scripting and code, but I'd gladly help you with the more simple stuff.

You site doesn't look bad as is, for the record.

thanks!

so what you're saying is if I use a new template, I will be forced to change things around. Will I lose any of our original information? Does that mean everything's included in a template?....fancy buttons and all? lol is it like, set the template and forget it?

On the other hand...what you're also saying is I could leave the background alone, and work on little buttons, tabs, and bars and things? and add a new banner? doing all that will also make it seem like i've changed the template?

Sorry for the 101 questions.

:p

No worries.

Actually, GP doesn't have "templates" per se, they have "Themes".  You can find these Themes (many of which were created by GP users) by going to Control Panel, Style & Colors, Select a Theme.  I actually haven't messed with these since I first made my site 2 years ago, but I am pretty sure that applying one of them will not loose any of your content.  It will change your colors, borders, text style, etc. . . but not the actual content.

I, however, didn't want to use a premade Theme.  Even though some of them are really good, so check them out to see if you like one.  Personally, I wanted to create a site that was unique to Lethal Ladies, so I passed up on using a Theme.

Check out my site, the link is in my sig.  I've never used any CSS (until yesterday when I added a short snippet to make my background fixed).  What I have done is used all the available GP tools for box borders, banner image, tab images, forum icons and roster medals.

In the beginning, I used a lot of free custom graphic generators, which you can easily find many of on Google.  This actually served us very well until recently when I found out how to make my own graphics.  I guess what I'm saying is that you don't have to be a web developer to create a unique site.

If you have Photoshop, you can create graphics youself.  If not, you can use Microsoft Word or even Paint to make simple images out of screenshots from your game.
Try out some of these sites to see if you like any of the button, image or text generators:

www.webfetti.com  (lot's of glitter, but also lots of fun animated graphics and text)
www.cooltext.com  (make snazzy text for alerts, announcements, or even tab buttons)
www.buttongenerator.com  (metalic/ shiny web buttons)

With a little googling, you can come up with plenty of sources for good images.  The one thing that took me forever to figure out was the box borders.  Can't find anything like what GP wants you to plug in, so I broke down and had to figure out how to make them.  Actually, I don't like the ones I currently have.  I made them using one of the buttons from buttongenerator.com.  Once I get really good, I'll make some much better ones.

I hope this helps a little.  Prepare to spend a LOT of time, at least upfront.  Once you have a good look down, maintenance is cake.

Now, if only GP would recognize the 2+ years of work I've put into our site and get make us a Spotlight Guild!

Don't hesitate to ask any questions, I do a lot of that here too and always get nice folks to help me out.  Again, I'm no web dev, but I'll help where I can.

Electra Outlaw is outstanding! She helped to change our old logo seal to something better looking. Thank you! I really do appreciate it.

I am starting to get more interested in your statement: "You can really dress up a site just by adding images to some of the fields in your Control Panel under "Style and Colors."

I was able to change my tab images tonight but I want to also remove the all those ugly border boxes everywhere else to make it appear smoother. See those ugly grey borders? HERE. How do I make them go away lol. I guess I need to match them with my tab images, right?

I'm beginning to see how I can change stuff around. Thanks for your response! Very helpful.  This www.cooltext.com is great!!  :)
