Mail Notification v6
by Mottie
Description
This mod opens a popup to notify you if you have a new mail message. It was written for users who wish to hide their top menu bar (state bar/log in bar). Or if you just want a bigger message telling you that you have mail. I've set it up to open either a growl window (timed popup) or a facebox (popup you have to close).
For more information on the custom variables, please see
this post
.
To style the growl window (pictured above), use the "Growl Window Styling" Mod or refer to
this post
.
To style the Facebox popup window, please refer to

Working on a "medieval" themed layout. Any suggestions as to how I can make this look better?
Medieval Knyt's Refuge
The usual complaint up front: you have 470px from the top of the page to the top of your content. That means a lot of extra scrolling on every single load of every single page. Trim up the wasted vertical space, your banner, and menu if necessary.
Another common issue: Your page is over 1100px wide. That means the majority of visitors (running 1024x768 resolution) will have to scroll horizontally even with the browser in full screen mode. I would either resize your menu images, reduce the number of images, or switch to a vertical side bar menu instead of horizontal top bar menu.
The site background is a great hue and contrast match to your menu, but it is a bit bright. Reduce the lightness of it a bit and it should be a little less dominating.
The content box backgrounds are not quite as good of match. The gray is fine, but the random green specling is a bit much. cut the contrast back to get rid of the odd pixels and drop the lightness down so that the white font shows up better.
The consistency is good, although you have a few side boxes on the Roster page that aren't on the other pages and seem a bit out of place.
And one last comment, I usually don't get into people's content, but as a veteran, seeing the injection of 9/11 rhetoric in the midst of veteran propaganda is most definitely disheartening. The implication that the war in Afghanistan or the occupation of Iraq are some how related to the events of 9/11 is a gross bastardization of the truth, and a corruption of the memory of what we are truly fighting for.

Getting Started!
Eben, thanks for the feedback.
The scrolling worked fine in FF/Opera, but it is a shame that Exploder sucks once again. The transparency is gone, so not only is it easier to read, but also scrolls nicely in IE. I also took your idea and made the nav bar the same spot on every page.
Got any other feedback? Aside from the random images
they will make sense in due time.

The black background on the headers with the white background on the bodies forms a very hard edge between the two bodies. That edge pulls the eye away from the text (both the title and the body). There is some technical word for this, but it is completely escaping me at the moment.
You may want to change the header background to a dark gray and the body background to a light gray (or washed out light tan to keep a bit more color)

Becoming Adept!
Hey Ebenthorin,
Thank you for your input. As far as the 1024x768 res...the only part that isn't fully in the screen is the Mail tab...which you can still see. I was really hoping for more input as to a better layout or a different type of graphical setup.
Please don't read anything into the tributes on our website that you might feel are "implied". We have quite a few military people in our guild...in fact, one of our Alliances are 100% military. We even have a 70+ year-old officer who is retired from the military. Our Guild leader is a military wife stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Vegas.
Each tribute is meant to be a seperate tribute...one for our troops in the Middle East, one for the heros that lost their lives trying to save others during 9/11 and one for all the people that served in previous wars.
I do have to say this about your comment: "The implication that the war in Afghanistan or the occupation of Iraq are somehow related to the events of 9/11..." That kinda confuses me. Would our troops and our allied troops be there right now if 9/11 never happened? I have no doubt in my mind as to what our troops are fighting for.
They are fighting for our freedom to be able to walk into another tower building and not have to worry about a plane flying into it.
They are fighting for the right of every American to walk down any street in any state..any city...and not have to worry about a parked car exploding in their face. They are fighting for people like me and you to be able to sit at home and play online games like Guild Wars and WoW and not have to worry about mortar shells hitting our house.
If you are truly a veteran...I honestly thank you and salute you for protecting the freedoms that most Americans take for granted.

And as I've told others here, if your goal is to reduce the amount of time people spend on your site, and your return visit counts, go for it.
If you are looking for a completely new idea, I would recommend flexing your creativity and seeing what you can come up with. I have time enough to do quick critiques with a few pointers. So come up with you're new layout, and I'll see if there is anything that can be done to improve on it.
Would our troops and our allied troops be there right now if 9/11 never happened?
The message you are trying to imply there is absolutely correct, but for reason completely different than those that you are likely believing in. To spare the rest of the forum visitors a long drawn out political debate, I would recommend we move such discussion to private messages. I would guess we have some very different points of view and I wouldn't mind learning a bit more about yours.
If you are truly a veteran...
I can scan in a copy of my DD214 if you'd like

Becoming Adept!
My main goal for our website is to keep our 90+ members looking at a new and interesting website. I change it for every major holiday including non-American holidays due to the fact that we have members from all over the world in our Guild.
I wasn't looking for a "completely new idea" for my layout. I was just asking for some pointers about maybe some new graphics...box border layouts...or maybe a different background layout. My "idea" is exactly what I had in mind.
As far as any "message" that I'm trying to imply is only that we support our troops and heros (firemen, police officers, Port Authority..etc.) 100%.
I do agree with you that this conversation needs to cease in this post.
I apologize to anyone reading this post for my rants. If you want to email me your thoughts...I will gladly talk to you, or anyone else with an opinion on this matter. My email is gforbush@sbcglobal.net
Anyone is more than welcome to send me thoughts on some better graphics I might could use for our box borders or background layouts.
That is the main reason I asked for suggestions.

1) The link in your sig is wrong. The text is your website, but the anchor points to GP's home page.
2) Your banner, well exceptionally well done (especially considering the animation and it's low bandwidth requirement), is too tall. You have 500px of space at the top of every page... that's a lot of scrolling.
3) There are no boarders on your boxes. That is OK, but you have to be VERY selective with your font coloring so that the site remains cohesive yet not jumbled.
4) The titles on your boxes are small and off white. They do less to draw the eye in than the content they head.
5) Yellow on Black is a very strong color combination that not only draws the eye immediately, but also is linked to an emotional response. Use it sparingly.
6) The first half of your welcome block is in that yellow, and is of a larger font than the title of your welcome block. The second half of the welcome block is in different fonts, different font weights, different colors, and different sizes.
7) Your links are inconsistently colored. Links in the Welcome box are blue (for link/vlink/hlink) yet links in the other boxes are Red for unvisited and yellow (again with the yellow!) for visited, with the hover having an underline... unless the link is visited, in which case hovering does not add an underline...
8) Yet another font on your Powerleveling Guides page. The navigation menu on this page also gets resized and causes the menu links to word wrap.
9) The Roster page has an odd assortment of side boxes that don't appear on other pages.
10) The Chat page has an odd assortment of side boxes that don't appear on other pages.
11) The link to the Home page should always be the first option in your navigation menu.
12) Your power leveling guides side box contains the same links as your recommended mods box.

OMG i'm blinded, I can't read your site.
Don't use a dark background and a bright text color. Ever. Even the white-on-black on this website is pushing it. Notice how the purple is easier to look at?
You seem to really like yellow/red.. I'd recommend going to colourlovers.com and grabbing a color palette there that has colors you like, then replacing some of them.
Just an idea.
Of course it's much easier to criticize than to create! Good job so far!
