Mail Notification v6
by Mottie
Description
This mod opens a popup to notify you if you have a new mail message. It was written for users who wish to hide their top menu bar (state bar/log in bar). Or if you just want a bigger message telling you that you have mail. I've set it up to open either a growl window (timed popup) or a facebox (popup you have to close).
For more information on the custom variables, please see
this post
.
To style the growl window (pictured above), use the "Growl Window Styling" Mod or refer to
this post
.
To style the Facebox popup window, please refer to

Hello everyone,
I suppose it is time to post ours:

I'm in the process of designing new buttons, you can have a look at them

Let me know what you think...

Your banner is 1080 pixels wide. That means the browser has to be about 1150 pixels wide in order to not scroll horizontally. Not only that, but since it is animated as well, that banner image alone is over 1 meg! It has some really nice artwork in it, but it is way to heavy and too wide in it's current use.
Also, your boarders are Blue, but the background is Red. That creates a primary color difference that draws the eye to the boarders, away from the text. Change your background to a more neutral color and the text will become easier to read.

here is my site
, I still need to make a few tweeks, but it is basicly done. This is for my City of Villains Supergroup on the Guardian server.
I made 99% of the graphics myself, and if I didn't make it, then it has been modified to the point that I can claim credit for it.
This is my first time to do a web site, but I do have a good knowledge of photoshop and making buttons etc.
Your banner is waaaaaay to tall. With my browser maximized on a 19" monitor I can't see anything more than the word 'Welcome' from your content panes. Let alone viewing the web site in a non-maximized window. That means I have to scroll on every_single_page just to see content.

What do you think about the banner now? As far as having to scroll to see content, that is unfortunately going to happen on just about any website with a banner. I wish I could block the banner on any page other than the homepage, then it would not be as much of a problem.

Better... You are at about 550 pixels from the top of the page to the top of your content. That is still going to be most, if not all of the visible area on most people's browsers though.
You still have a page width over 1050 pixels as well. Which means on anything smaller than a 19" or wide-screen monitor, your viewers are going to have to scroll sideways to get all of your content.
Almost every web page will require vertical scrolling at some point. But it is still just like the newspaper, you want as much of your important content to be visible with out needing to scroll, click, or navigate. That's the whole purpose of the small boxes, to get important content up to the top of the screen.
These are the fundamentals of website design. Most visitors are going to be looking at your website at approximately 800x600 viewing area (or 744x410 for those few people still using 800x600 monitors), Even if they are browsing full screen at 1024x768, your viewing area is only 968x578. Anything over that and the user is going to have to scroll. And the more your viewers have to scroll, the more annoyed they will become with your website. With your current banner, your viewers will have to scroll every time they load a page! If you are looking to get people to NOT come to your web site, that is a sure fire way to do it.
You have about 10 seconds and 3 clicks to get the user to where they want to be. Any more then that, it is not worth their time. If they have to spend 3 seconds and a click on every single page load, just to get to the content that might be what they are looking for, they'll give up in short order.
I like the style, but you need to re-work the layout and scale of the banner to get that content above the fold. Aim for 300 or less pixels from the top of the page to the top of your content. That will ensure that even at 800x600, your visitors will at least be able to see your first headline with out scrolling.

It looks like your whole page has a rather large left side margin (~60px), that eats up a decent amount of realistate, and combined with the width ~1070 pixels wide. That means that people with a 17" monitor, running 1024x768 resolution, with their browser in full screen mode, will still get a horizontal scroll bar. I would cut that left side margin down to 15 pixels or so, and scale the banner image down a bit (although the font size is good).
The animated GIF menu images are neat, but distracting. If you really like the animated effect though, I would recommend turning off Looping so that when the user moves to a new page, the current menu option brightens once. Enough to get your attention to show you where you are, but not enough to keep pulling your eye away from the content.
It looks like you are using CSS to recolor links, which is a debatable practice (I personally prefer to do so to get links to color match the site and for ease of reading, but some consider it inappropriate as it overrides the user's preference). One thing about it that does concern me though is that your link:hover CSS appears to be setting the text to all caps which is making 'dancing text'. If you want to use the all caps trick, make sure your links are in a static width font (like System or Courier New). That should allow you to swap to caps with out altering the string's pixel length.
You may want to look at the consistency from page to page as well. The Links section on your home page is not the same as the Links section on your forum. On your home page the "who's online" section is bottom right while on the forum page it is bottom left.
There are also two news blocks showing on your home page. I think the small news block is redundant as you have a large news block right next to it.
You also have some type of small-roster block on your home page, but you don't have the Armory Integration turned on. So that window is only showing an error message. Even if you enable the Armory Integration, is Armory info something you want to cram onto the home page? It already has the Roster page dedicated to it.

Thanks for the feedback Eben. I thought the 'dancing text' had to do with the all caps, was trying to find a font that it would work with. Thanks for the two suggestions.
I think that the resolution issue on a 17" monitor @
1024x768 has more to do with the Banner size. I didn't even think to try and use this res until I saw your post. Since Your post, I have changed my resolution to that at work and it seems the banner is hanging over the right side of the page a bit, I don't have to scroll, but I still need to shrink it a bit more.
I agree the "flashing" on the tabs is a bit distracting at first, and I know what you are talking about with using CSS to override the font color, but since this isn't for a customer I'll make people deal with it. >:) I actually had those same concerns since I am just now learning this(HTML/XHTML and CSS).
As for everything else you had mention, that is exactly why I came here and asked for some input! I find that after working on something for so long I need other eyes to see it and give me their thoughts.
I have made a few adjustments and will continue more later. Thank you kindly for taking the time and responding.
Oh if you want to see the changes I have made so far, the link is in my tiny sig.
Thanks again.
EDIT: Ok just shortened up the banner, seems good now I think. More feed back if you have time thanks!
