Hello GP Community,

First post here. My question follows

Is there any way to get the RSS feed to include posts in other areas other than Public by using some sort of authentication at this point in time?

Thank you for your help and any insight into the issue would be helpfull.

Hi Vkoloyan!

I know there is another post about doing this elsewhere ( I didn't bother looking for it ). But I do believe a feature request was submitted, but you might want to add another.

I'd love to see this as well. I want to move my guild site over to here, but without better RSS feeds, we have to stay where we are. I submitted a feature request last week.

Thanks,

This seems like it should be easily available as this is essentially what's displayed at the bottom of the forums page - the list of posts that have come in recently that _you_ specifically can see. How do I get that in RSS format?

Thanks!

I, too, would like to see this feature. It's a pain to have to go to a site regularly when there might not even be new posts.

Hiya,

This is right around the top of our list of feature requests. Here's the hold-up:

We could accept a user name and password as parameters to the address of the RSS feed, or a key. Either way, if we do that, then users on your site could accidentally expose sensitive information by mishandling that link. We already get support tickets because people simply copy and paste a single page. Many popular RSS readers (including Google Reader) provide the ability for people to share feeds with others, and it's easy to imagine the inadvertent sharing of sensitive information this way.

It seems like it's something people really want though, so tell me: is the possible security risk worth it to you?

Ehm...I'm good with the way it is. If there's info that I'd like going over the public waves I put it in public forum.
So my vote is NO please leave as is. Thank you and have a nice day

There's a way to do it with cookies, I believe. And personally, if it's a feed that I know is specific to my login credentials, I'm not gonna share it with people or would put it in a private category in my RSS reader.

Our old host had the username in cleartext but the password encrypted/encoded. So if someone found the link, yes, they could read the same forums that I have access too, but they could not log into the site.

Our guild ranks are used as such: friends of our guild, members, raid leaders, officers, superadmin. The only forums that I'd prefer not get accidentally shared are the officer & superadmin level ones, but the people in those ranks are all very tech-saavy (or anti-RSS for reasons beyond me) that I would trust them to take care of their RSS link.

Personally, I'd prefer a key than user/pass on the URL because you guys have SO many people in your user pool. I like the anonymity of a key.

My 2c would be to offer it, let people know of the risks and go from there. Yes, some people will accidentally expose information but I like assuming that people are clever and more aware of security issues these days. I'm an optimist.

I'd like to be more optimistic, too, but with all of the people using the same user names and passwords on web sites as they do for logging into games... Well, I'm a bit cautious. The only other consideration, then, would be those who share the link maliciously -- providing access to private guild information to someone else with a single link.

But yes, we'd go with the user name + key.

It sounds like we could make this happen, with one caveat -- the admins of a guild site would have to be able to disable non-public RSS feeds, site-wide. That way, admins who don't want to risk it wouldn't have anything to worry about, and those who don't mind would be able to offer the feature to their users.

Also, since we'd be offering more than just forum feeds (events, news, shouts, and administrative items of interest -- such as new members joining the site -- are all up there in the feature requests), any links/images that currently say "RSS" would, instead of just sending you to the RSS feed itself, send you to a page that lists all of the available RSS feeds for the site. This might also include an "Everything" feed.

How does this sound to everyone? I'm going to sticky this so we can get a consensus and I can get to work on it.

I like the ability for the admin to disable the feeds globally if that was what they wanted.

I like the current RSS links directing you to a page with a list of all feeds individually or a combined feed.

Thanks for putting so much thought into this.
