Hi all. I used the search function for this problem but didn't see quite a similar problem.

I do a lot of posting on my guild's forum as GL and use links a lot. I link mostly to other sections of our own forum.

The problem is that many people of my guild will:
  • click a link
  • either succesfully see the destination page, or randomly:
  • get shown the "you are not logged in with the correct permissions for that forum" page.

I'm not sure what causes this. I've looked at:

  • using [url=bla ]text[./url] links
  • using the hyperlink manager

As far as I can see the same HTML comes out of both, so that couldn't be the problem, right?

I usually build up links by using the URLs of an thread or subforum. Something that looks like http://lowlandelites.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=243102&ForumID=1142135&TabID=2045416&Replies=0&TopicID=7841852 and I will usually hand make a link like this - link to topic.

Personally I use firefox with lastpass addon, so the re-logging in for me goes automatically, but it's annoying for those dealing with the problem.

Any ideas as to what is going on here or how to fix?

Thanks!

Hi Twobears123!

I believe the main issue here is using links with different domain names. For example, I can get to this same post using:

Only the last link will ensure that I don't have to log in again. Because it doesn't change the domain that you are logged into. I think the third one behaves the same way, but since I also use lastpass and have been using that url format all along, I haven't noticed any problems. If you have ever used my help site, I don't think it has made you log in more than once, but no one has ever mentioned it.

I think there's a lightbulb (slowly) starting to glow over my head ... and I think you're right.

I just checked and there are a number of links that use the lowlandelites.guildportal.com domain name and some using www.guildportal.com.

I can stay on lowlandelites.*** when not clicking links but browing the forum like normal. When I then click a www.guildportal.com link I switch to that domain name. When I click a lowlandelites.*** link I switch again, etc.

So I guess the solution would be to review the links we have now and change them all to 1 or the other, as long as they're all the same domain name.

Thanks a lot, going to try it out!

I think I may just make a mod to fix links... stay tuned!

Update: Ok done... The mod is called "Fix links" - I'm in too much of a hurry to think of a clever name

That sounds great. I found the mod, about to install it, but ... it does leave non-guildportal links alone, right? And does it alter the links permanently or just render different HTML from the saved/unaltered posts?

The script looks for all links with "guildportal.com/Guild.aspx" and basically chops off the beginning of the url (so the domain name) and replaces it with "http://guildportal.com/Guild.aspx"

It doesn't touch non-guildportal links or links that don't match the pattern.

Looks like it works. All the time when I'm browsing the forum I stay on guildportal.com/

And when I manually add links like [url=lowlandelites.guildportal.com/blabla  etc, I will still get linked to a guildportal.com/ page without the lowlandelites bit.

The reason for the need to log in with different domains is that each has their own cookie. So if you log in with a www.guildportal.com, it'll make a cookie for that domain. If you also log on with customdomain.guildportal.com, it will make a cookie for that one as well. As long as you are logged in with both domains, it won't ask for a password for either. If one or both cookies don't exist for a given domain, it will require you to log in for that domain. I use CCleaner to preserve my GP cookie(s) and usually only have to log in when they expire or the site needs a new one created.

Great idea, Mottie. Apple may have the genius bar, but GP has the Mottie-bar! The Mottie-bar makes "applesauce" out of the genius bar!
