What do I need to do to change the color of the area surrounding the avatar?

basically like how its set up in here at the admin forums.

I know about the alternating schemes, but it seems to be linked to the general background.

Any hints would be appreciated.

You'll probably have to do it through custom CSS. Look at your page's source and copy the part in between the <style> tags. Paste that into your custom CSS box. Then go to the forums and find the CSS class that defines the avatar bar. Once you know the class name, go back to the custom CSS and find that class. If the class isn't listed, it is likely being inherited, so just stick it in there again with the new attributes you want to change.

This is the CSS part you are interested in:

     BACKGROUND-COLOR: #505050;
     WIDTH: 150px;

I couldn't find anything in the settings to alter it via Control Panel.
