Becoming Adept!

I have recently been working on implimenting tab button images to my site, and i've been somewhat successful.  My dilema, however, is that when i photoshop the images to put in, they're left with white edges around them.  i've seen multiple sites here on GP containing round tab button images with transparent areas around them.  I was wondering how you'd go about doing that.  You can take a look at my site here>http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=136920&TabID=1164493  You'll see them.

I'll try from what I can remember.  I had the same problem- only worse I hope this will help- I'll write out easy way.. there are a lot of customizablet settings, but this should do it for you.

1- you have to save the image as a .gif -> this format allows transparancies (a few others as well.. but this is what I know)

After you select .gif, there should be a matte color box-   if you have darker bacground, pick black, a lighter one, pick white..  (I'd try black first w/ your website).

On colors- make sure it's on 256.

Hopefully that'll work.. if not.. more tweaking w/ the other options.  good luck!

Another thing to try is the format .png.  Overall, it is a much better quality than .gif, and the tranparency available is much more robust.

Try saving out a GIF with a transparent background first, if that fails, then add a matte. I think you'll find the difference between 64-colours with Dither and 256 is quite small. Then again, the file size will be small anyway, especially when you take into account broadband connections

As for .png. I'd leave this for another 3-4months as IE 5 & 6 (Win ) don't support the transparency.* You can get it working with JavaScript (JS), but that means some awkward CSS to hide the default tabs so you can use your own JS enabled ones.

*IE 7 fully supports png files, but the browser only accounts for about 20% of traffic at the moment.
