Getting Started!

Hello everyone! This is my first time ever trying to make a webpage. By that I mean, no really, I have no idea what I'm doing, type of first time. So. The first thing I want to do is make a column-like background. I know that dosn't mean anything to you, because I don't know what that is called. Here is an example or two.

http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=42886&TabID=378370

and

http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=120957&TabID=1031580

(I didn't ask for permission to use them as examples, but I figure the free exposure will make it ok =) GREAT sites by the way! You have inspired me.)

Currently my site has a flat background. Like this.

http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=96279&TabID=825562

(Top notch group of guys!)

So. I have no idea what it is called or how to do it. My website basicly is setting at the default. Can anyone help? Photoshop I am a wiz at. I can make the image myself if I figure out what I need to do.

Thanks in advance!

So.. in light of not yet knowing what to do.. I went ahead and made the image I wanted.. but it dosn't seem to be setting in the background the right way...

http://www.guildportal.com/Guild.aspx?GuildID=277894&TabID=2332197

Any suggestions? I looked around and did the CCS style thing.. it reads like this.

body{ color: #000; background: #000 url('http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u178/lewis134/background.jpg') background-repeat: no-repeat; background-attachment: fixed; center }

Is that not right?

*EDIT*

Ok so I changed it to

body{ color: #000; background: #000 url('http://www.axiomfiles.com/Files/277894/background.jpg') center no-repeat; }

I guess this is ok. I think photobucket was making my picture smaller or something. Anyways, is there any way to get it to fit the sides of the screen instead of having the black there?

I haven't had a chance to test this, but try this:

If you want to keep the 3 columns like you have on your site, then:
Control Panel > Style & Colors > Page Styles > Page Body (tab)

Content Area Width: 900px
then,
Control Panel > Site Pages > Home - Display Options

Left Pane Width: 150px
Center Pane Width: 600px
Right Pane Width: 150px

and if you look at those sites, they only have two columns, so I'd delete one side and make the center pane width: 750px... I determined these numbers from the spacing you left in the middle of your background image.

And as for the background image, if you look at those two sites again, you'll notice the background does scroll with the page. You can add a header and footer to cap off the repeating middle or you could make your background image taller and fix it in place.
body{ color: #000; background: #000 url('http://www.axiomfiles.com/Files/277894/background.jpg') center repeat-y; }

Holy cow! Look at that! Amazing! Your the best! I do need to work on the background some... but that all lines up really good! Thanks a ton! Now. All I have to do is figure out how to do everything else I need. I will make some more pictures and see what I can do! I look forward to working with you in the future, lol!

Also when you get a chance, check out this master thread and take a peek at my test site (link in my sig) hopefully you'll find what you're looking for somewhere in that mess.
