The night was cold and rainy. The thunder and lightning had been growing louder and closer as the night drew on. Anyone out traveling this night, must have had urgent business.  A quick knock and the door to the hall swung open. A figure steps threw and quickly slams the door back shut.

Making notice of the surroundings, the figure walks gracely towards those in attendance.  Stopping halfway down the hall in the torchlight, the hood of the much used traveling cloak is removed. Standing before you is an elf warrior, wearing full plate and armed only with a longbow.

Wiping the rain from his face, the visitor speaks:

"Hail and well met.  I am Turen Stormwind, leader of the now reformed Crimson Nexus.  I have chosen to seek the Fellowship out,  so that we may renew the bonds our guilds once shared."

Turen watches the faces of the Fellowships members as he mentioned the name of a guild most have forgotten. Waiting for the reactions to end, He continues to speak.

"I see the looks upon ye faces.  It is true, Crimson Nexus has returned and I am looking forward to rebuilding and restoring us back to the glory that we once had. I believe that road starts with first restoring the bonds with friends lost."

(OOC: Sorry I hate ooc too.  I am slowly working on getting CN going and would like to ally with the Fellowship. Our website is in the works on guildportal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Uxor)

(( Taren Stormwind,

I wish you well in your endevor.

World of Warcraft, the Wonder Bread offantasy role-playing, has insidiously affected millions of gamers. Wesee references to that game's psychotic background story everywherethat Blizzard Entertainment's marketing department can insert them intocommercial culture. Hordes of fanboys and fangirls act as mindlessautomatons to assist them in spreading the evil word to those who don'tknow any better. Instead of buttering their bread maybe you couldchange your name to something distinctly non-WoW?  Supporters ofthe  role-playing traditions of Dungeons and Dragons could only beimpressed and encouraged by such an act of solidarity.

It is not my intention to insult you, only to offer a helpful suggestion.

Greetings,
Thundersong Moor ))

((Well, I will confess that as a non-wow player, any wowy reference in the name is lost on me. And as far as a 'change' that would not be possible for them Thunder... they've been CN since even I came to Thelanis and before that. The name is more or less ingrained in the Thelanis 'culture' now as FotGN would be.

But hey, just cause two things share the same name doesn't mean one can't be radically different than the other and I've known the Nexus folks and admired their very in character manner of behavior for a long time, so I know they're legit in their sentiment for RP in game))

*Uxor stepped forward a little and bowed to Turen. She had been on many ventures with Varro to the quarters of the Syndicate. Varro had recently informed here that certain...changes had been in the works. She understood now what sort of changes those were. She held up her hand to imply a moment to converse with the others gathered there. She milled over towards Hope and the others present, writing out* "I remember the Nexus. I remember them at our Masked Ball even. They are a noble and hearty band, and I would regard an alliance with them as beneficial. If it suits you" *and once the words had been read by those present, Uxor bowed again with a hand to her chest in salute*

((I meant the name Taren Stormwind: Tauren are a race of cow-like beingswho walk upright as humans do, Stormwind is the shiney capitol of thehuman race. Crimson Nexus sounds really cool. though.))

 Long live CrimsonNexus.

((Sorry, I  assume that we all have been bombarded by Blizzard'smarketing so much that anyone would know what I was talking about. Butyou, Uxor, have better taste than many, so those marketing misslesnever found their target.  I find that very encouraging.))

(his name's t-U-ren....not with an a.
i do know what the bull ppl are in WoW, hubby played that game for a little while so I'm not completely absent of some of the content. But for me, the name is different to a point that wow isn't what i thought of

What bout the last name?

And for me, names really can be anything a person wants. Even if someone were to name their character Zeus. . . despite that being a really overused greek character's name, when I saw them, I wouldn't regard them as being actually Zeus. It'd be the same as seeing two guys  named Steve. Just cause they're both Steve doesn't mean they were named Steve for the same reasons. Or that they're the same people. And sometimes we pick character names that illude to things, either on a personal level, or on a literary level.

Take Uxor's dad for instance. I built that character for fun in a Forgotten realms game, but I built his ENTIRE progression/class levels/abilities around making him JUST like a pale-white version of the Brad Pitt Achillies from the movie Troy. Now granted I didn't name him Brad... or Achillies, or even something slightly off from Achillies like "Akeeles"... I named him Optelius. Part of that word is from the word 'optimize' because I optimized the character for everything Achillies related...and the other part because it sounded kinda greeky.

Or here's a REALLY good one:

Since I know you've listened to the recordings already Thunder, there was a char made mention of in that game who's name was pronounced "yah-see-on"... that character was the captain of the pirate ship they make mention of. The spelling of the name is "Ias'Eon" which in the language of his people means "Holy Warrior" ... the name of his ship is the Arego.

now I want you to look at these:
Ias'Eon, Captain of the Arego
Jason and the Argonauts

any similarities there? I named him and his ship that way intentionally mind you because of the pirate and adventuring theme, and because I love greek myth. But when a player hears 'yah-see-on' that's not what they think of, and even the Arego reference might be a little lost to them. And I never have him doing anything that Jason would have done, and language wise, I've incorporated the name into a part of the setting language that still works well. But even once I let them in on that tidbit (that's still an ongoing setting for my other group of players) they regard that character with dire seriousness. They never joke around about the name. They never try to compaire him to Jason and the Argonauts. Everyone, including me, is a happy camper.

Or here's one that's less hidden: in that same game, the character played by our younger player, Titus Pulo. I know you watch Rome. I know you know EXACTLY who Titus Pulo is. Even the rest of the players also watched Rome and knew EXACTLY who he is as well. His entire character sheet I gave him abilities that correspond to what Titus's would be in a game system. I gave him a slightly different storyline... he was a guard to the Lord Mendalar.  But you know why that character worked? Because the player who was playing Titus Pulo had never watched Rome and had no clue anything about the show or about Titus Pulo. All he knew was the little tidbits we gave him, and he still managed to play that character in a way that was completely unrelated to the Rome Titus Pulo. And the other players didn't really regard him as being the ACTUAL Titus Pulo, merely inspiration to draw on.

So if carefully and tactfully placed, even if you have a character name that references RL material or other bodies of work, you can swing it. Which is the situation I think Turen is in. Even if he named it that way on purpose... maybe he switched from WoW to DDO and never went back, but has friends he liked back on Wow, so he took the name as a memorial?

Post Script: The ooc name i use in DDO and the Warforged I have in game named "Mer'lask" well you've probably heard the description in the recordings of what the Mer'lask IS... it's a creature from my setting. But what you probably don't know is many years ago when I was doing that setting I was playing EQ and I made a little beastlord named Merlask. And I've kept the nickname since. But can you really say that my little warforged is a reference to EQ just because I kept the same name?

She notices the magic aura of the bow the elf warrior had substituted any typical weapon like a sword or mace.  Ahopiana, Archon Hope of-the-Lady, stands, nods keeping her eyes locked on the visiter's, and says with a warm inviting voice,  "Welcome Turen...we've been expecting you."

((by all means, we would love to ally with the CN))

"Tis a pleasure to have ye as our ally.  If any of ye members need assistance, feel free to call upon us.  I shall inform  all of Crimson Nexus' members of our position. If ye could excuse me, I must take my leave. I wish to get word spread as quickly as possible."

Turen salutes all in attendance and head back the way he came. Before leaving, he turns and looks right at Uxor, a small smile across his face. With a nod of his head, he is off back into the storm and on his way to the Crimson Nexus hall.

((OOC: Thundersong, Thank you for your concern. I have never played WOW nor do I intend to. Besides I have rerolled Turen already and dont plan on doing it again. I look forward to seeing you all ingame and on the boards!!!))
