Every moment in this cell is a moment in agony. Life itself has no place here as even the rats and roaches that call home to the damp dreariness are nowhere to be found. The slamming of the prison door whispered a word of death to the faint torch that once created twisted shadows, which crept from niche to niche in a burgeoning darkness.  A forgotten number of days have passed since I had savoured a stale crumb of bread with a thirsty tongue.  An even longer span of time passed since I had last seen the face of another living soul, the guard who hastened to leave me to the mercy of my mind. My only companion...

The Pixie and the Bixie

Dainty flutters blew a gentle breeze in the nursery of Greater Faydark. With a bright innocence, pairs of eyes wandered to and fro between curiosities and oddities that passed the area. While many young fae spent the day jumping on the tops of mushrooms or gathering spirit bloom bouquets for their mothers, one fae kept busy by playing with a hollow reed plucked from the Amethyst Pond.

As the golden glow glided through the sky, the fae whittled away at the reed's tip, creating a suitable mouth piece. She then carved a hole at the center of the reed and loosely attached a thin white tea leaf to the opening. Her instrument complete, the gnome-minded flutterer carried her new tinker to the droning of bixie tree. The fae, seeking concealment beneath a large, twisting root, lifted the reed to her lips and gave puffs of breath. A new sound began to mingle with the buzzing, and as different as the one making the sound was to those hovering above her, the sound bore no difference to the rest.

While the buzzing of the reed called for no hostile attention, attention it found in the ears of a nearby soldier bixie. Perhaps for the curiosity in a burrowing brother or valiance in his rescue, the soldier flew closer to the root to inspect. It hovered over the fae's hiding spot, making drones of his own, and awaited a response. Hearing no change in the buzzes beneath, it turned around to continue its watch.

Before flying far, a rock met its head, and the bixie soon found new heights upon hitting the ground. The fae beneath the root left the shade of comfort for a brief moment quickly pulled the bixie husk into the shadows. She fumbled her hands about in the darkness, pricking her palm on the very part she was seeking. Stifling a yelp, she took a firm grasp of the object and yanked until it came free. Her head peeked out from under the root once more and noticed that once the murdunk sky had given way to a twinkling spread over a hum of distant wings. The corners of her lips grew into a smile, and wielding a stinger in hand, she fluttered home.
